Mounting, Truing and Dressing

GENERAL

Maximum results and lower grinding costs can be achieved with Superabrasive wheels, only if the wheel is properly mounted, trued, dressed and used. The guidelines in this section are designed to ensure the most efficient use of diamond and CBN products.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

MOUNTING - is the process of putting the superabrasive
wheel on the machine arbor or spindle preparatory to truing
and dressing prior to use.

TRUING - is the process of making a wheel round and
concentric with the spindle axis. Truing also refers to
the process of forming a specific face or profile on a
wheel for grinding special contours. (Single Layer
wheels do not require truing.)

DRESSING - is the process of opening the face of a trued
wheel by removing some of the bond, thereby exposing the
sharp, strong, abrasive grains. Dressing also cleans the
wheel face of all non-cutting materials. (Some vitrified
bonds especially those used in internal grinding do not
require dressing.)

CONDITIONING - is the process of restoring the geometry
of a CBN wheel and/or exposing more abrasive grain during
its working life. Conditioning ma
