Focused Objective:
The Coolant Systems Services of the Higgins Grinding Technology Center, Saint Gobain Abrasives, Worcester MA, USA, has been established as a service to grinding process end-users as well as machine tool companies, coolant suppliers and other related industries. Our objective is to help optimize the coolant related aspects in the grinding process systems using a robust and proven technical approach, CSS will design efficient nozzles, optimize flow rate and pressure, advise on fluid type, and make recommendations on filtration, pump and pipe work specifications. The end result is to achieve the step change in cost, quality and productivity required by every manufacturer to meet their competitive challenges in the Global Economy.
Dedicated and Unparalleled Resources:
The CSS is made available to you though a group of talented and highly specialized technical resources; the CSS is headed by Dr. John Webster, a renowned expert in Coolant Applications Technology. The CSS staff is backed by the HGTC staff and Saint Gobain Abrasives worldwide resources, i.e.: application, research, manufacturing and field sales engineers. We also utilize strategic alliances with coolant suppliers.

“Achieving the desired cooling and lubrication may often be limited by nozzle design, pressure loss, wrong fluid type, inadequate filtration or wrong pump selection. Optimization of the application of coolant into the grinding zone leads to several outputs and their related benefits to the customer.”

Wide Variety of Testing and Simulation Equipment:
The CSS is fully supported by the equipment and facilities of the HGTC. These include: simulation equipment for coolant flow studies, nozzles design and fabrication capabilities and grinding process equipment to simulate and evaluate, production processes.
Proven Efficiency Gains:
Achieving the desired cooling and lubrication may often be limited by nozzle design, pressure loss, wrong fluid type, inadequate filtration or wrong pump selection. Optimization of the application of coolant into the grinding zone leads to several outputs and their related benefits to the customer. Nozzles with balanced internal converging geometry produce jets with excellent coherency and high discharge coefficient. Individual or multiple nozzles of modular design can be strategically positioned to cool the grinding zone with high efficiency.
Traditional nozzles have turbulent or eddy zones due to poor internal geometry, The generic profile preferred by CSS creates coherent jets with high discharge coefficient. Round and rectangular nozzles can be built with this well tested profile to suit specific application needs. In addition, if the application demands it, shoe nozzles can also be developed.
Systematic Procedure for Producing Results:
The customer defines the problem, which is reviewed by HGTC as a suitable opportunity.
The problem is further studied to identify the customer's strategic needs and specific next steps to achieve them.
A proposal of application development and feasibility research is presented to the customer along with cost.
Proposal is approved by the customer and the confidentiality is agreed upon.
Project is carried out with active customer interaction.
Markets and Applications of Completed Projects:
Creep-feed grinding of aerospace alloys and other difficult-to-grind materials
Surface grinding of heat sensitive tool steels
Internal and external cylindrical grinding of bearing steels
