Description of Ceramic and Glass Grinding and Finishing
Although the major use of coated abrasives in the Glass Industry is for grinding and polishing the edges of safety glass and mirrors, coated abrasives are also used on a variety of sharpening and polishing operations on specialized scientific glassware, grinding stemware, removing blemishes from TV picture tubes, etc.
Glass is usually ground “wet” to eliminate the problem of dust and to reduce the risk of burning or breaking the glass, particularly when grinding hand-blown glass or stemware. Intermediate glass and ceramic grinding is performed almost exclusively by silicon carbide or zirconia alumina abrasive products, because of their hardness, cutting ability and friable nature. Fine grit silicon carbide abrasives and special cork products are used for finishing and polishing.
